Con Edison is introducing SmartCharge Commercial, a pioneering rewards program aimed at boosting electric vehicle (EV) charger installations by commercial entities in New York City and Westchester County. This initiative seeks to expedite the shift towards clean energy transportation by incentivizing commercial charging station operators.

Building upon the SmartCharge New York program, which targets personal EV drivers, SmartCharge Commercial extends financial incentives to commercial charging sites such as public, workplace, multifamily, retail, and fleet locations. These incentives are designed to encourage charging during off-peak hours and to reduce charging activities when local power demand peaks.

Britt Reichborn-Kjennerud, director of E-Mobility & Demonstrations at Con Edison, emphasized the program’s dual benefits: “Con Edison is thinking more boldly about ways to serve increased demand from electric vehicles and strengthen the sustainability of our energy grid as more of our customers transition to electric vehicles, including medium- and heavy-duty fleets.” She further highlighted the initiative’s role in facilitating commercial charging infrastructure development, thereby supporting New York’s clean energy objectives.

Con Edison’s Clean Energy Commitment aligns with New York State’s ambitious emission reduction targets, which mandate a transition to zero-emission vehicles across various vehicle categories by set deadlines. To support this transition, Con Edison has committed up to $194 million over the next three years to encourage grid-friendly charging practices.

Tobias Lescht, Head of Infrastructure for Revel, lauded Con Edison’s efforts: “Con Edison continues to be one of Revel’s most important partners in our mission to bring reliable public fast charging to every New Yorker.” He acknowledged the SmartCharge Commercial program as a vital step towards a sustainable EV future in New York, noting its potential to lower operational costs and reinvest in community benefits.

The program aims to alleviate electric grid stress by promoting off-peak charging and offers higher incentives for publicly accessible stations and transit charging. Participants are required to submit charging data to qualify for rewards.

SmartCharge Commercial not only complements the existing SmartCharge New York program but also enhances Con Edison’s broader strategy to support electric vehicle adoption, reduce emissions, and maintain grid reliability in New York City and Westchester County.
