Jernigan Oil Company, Inc., the parent entity of Duck Thru Food Stores, has officially commenced the rollout of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, beginning with the inauguration of an EV Charger at Duck Thru 54 in Columbia, NC. Chosen for this pivotal installation was FreeWire Technologies‘ Boost Charger 200, marking Duck Thru’s entry into the provision of alternative fueling options for EV motorists in Eastern North Carolina. This initiative is not a standalone project; Duck Thru is set on expanding these services across Eastern North Carolina and Southern Virginia.
The surge in EV adoption within North Carolina is noteworthy, with the state documenting a 48.6% increase in electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles as of January 2023, compared to the previous year. In response, Jernigan Oil aims to cater to this growing demand by integrating FreeWire’s ultrafast Boost Charger 200 into their service offerings. This particular model boasts a 160 kWh energy storage capacity and the ability to deliver up to 200 miles of charge in just 15 minutes, all while alleviating the stress on local electric grids.
FreeWire’s innovative charging solution permits the simultaneous fast charging of two EVs by leveraging an internal battery, which facilitates a quicker charging process without direct grid dependency. This approach not only ensures efficient power usage but also significantly reduces installation and operational costs by up to 70%.
Ethan Sprague, Senior Vice President of Sales, Marketing, and Policy at FreeWire, commended Duck Thru’s efforts in grid conservation, stating, “We applaud the work that Duck Thru is doing to protect its electric grid infrastructure.” He highlighted the benefit of using battery-integrated technology for ultrafast charging without overburdening the existing grid infrastructure.
The project received joint funding from Jernigan Oil Company, Inc. and the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality Division of Air Quality, utilizing Volkswagen Mitigation Trust Funding.
