Fees For EV Charging? Thomas Edison Park Makes Proposal To Public

[ad_1]

WEST ORANGE, NJ — A national historic park in West Orange is putting forth a potentially controversial question to the public: How much should it cost to charge an electric vehicle on the premises?

Thomas Edison National Historical Park recently announced that it is proposing a change to its electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. If approved, the proposal will add fees for public charging stations, which will generate revenue to pay for electricity and maintenance costs and support new stations throughout the park.

The change would prioritize visitors’ use of EV chargers and help ensure that the park can continue to provide this amenity in the future, administrators said.

How much would it cost? According to a statement from park authorities:

“The proposed rate for EV charging is $0.04/min kWh (kilowatt hour) with an initial plug-in fee of $2.00. After the first 2 hours, a $2.00 surcharge will be added to encourage turn-over of charging station use. This rate is comparable to similar EV charging costs in the surrounding area.”

If approved, the fees would be implemented in the Spring of 2024, administrators said.

Comments on the proposal will be accepted until Feb. 25, 2024. The park is utilizing the National Park Service’s Planning, Environment, and Public Comment (PEPC) website to share project information and request comments. All comments must be submitted online through PEPC at: https://parkplanning.nps.gov/parkHome.cfm?parkID=222.
