Ionna Charging Network’s Plan to Ease Range Anxiety with 30,000 High-Powered Public Chargers

Range anxiety, the fear of running out of power while driving an electric vehicle (EV), continues to be a significant barrier to widespread EV adoption. However, a new initiative by the Ionna charging network aims to alleviate this concern by installing at least 30,000 high-powered public chargers in strategic locations throughout North America, including Wisconsin.

Addressing the Charging Gap

According to the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, Wisconsin currently has only approximately 1,223 public chargers available, resulting in a ratio of 25 EVs per charging port. This disparity contributes to the hesitancy of potential EV owners, as the lack of convenient charging options exacerbates range anxiety.

Private entities, like the Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA), are working to build infrastructure to increase charging accessibility. Apps such as PlugShare help drivers find and manage charging stations. Nevertheless, the current infrastructure requires improvement, and investments in level 3 fast chargers, which cost around $100,000, are necessary.

The Ionna Charging Network: A Beacon of Hope

Ionna’s ambitious plan to install 30,000 high-powered public chargers, including those in Wisconsin, is a significant step towards addressing the charging gap. By offering the CCS plug, Ionna can access $7.5 billion in federal funding under the 2021 bipartisan infrastructure law to expand EV charging infrastructure in the U.S.

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory has estimated that the U.S. requires more publicly accessible DC fast chargers to support the growing number of EVs on the road. Ionna’s efforts align with this need and aim to make EV charging as convenient and accessible as refueling traditional gasoline vehicles.

Illinois Leading the Charge

Illinois is also taking strides in expanding its EV charging infrastructure. The state has set a goal of having one million EVs on its roads by 2030. To achieve this, the Electric Vehicle Charging Act requires new buildings to be EV capable and promotes public transit electrification and EV ownership.

Chicago-area municipalities have initiated a grant program to prepare their infrastructure for electric vehicles. University Park, for instance, has acquired an EV charging station for electric semi-trucks and is supporting residents in obtaining their own EVs.

Wisconsin can learn from Illinois’ example and work towards creating a more conducive environment for EV adoption by expanding its charging infrastructure and addressing range anxiety.

The National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program is providing over $78 million to expand charging infrastructure across Wisconsin. However, the state legislature needs to change a law to access these funds. The Wisconsin Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Plan aims to install chargers across the state and require businesses to maintain them with at least 97% operational time annually.

As of February 15, 2024, the Ionna charging network’s efforts, combined with state initiatives and private investments, are paving the way for a future where range anxiety is no longer a deterrent to EV adoption.

By expanding the EV charging infrastructure, we can create a greener, more sustainable future and make electric vehicles a viable option for all.
