RADNOR — Radnor commissioners approved a motion rejecting the single bid it received for the installation of an electric vehicle charging station at the township administration building.
As part of the same motion, they also authorized the re-advertisement for a new round of bids for the project.
So, why did they reject the first bid?
“We only received one bid,” Steve Norcini, township engineer, told members of the board of commissioners just before their vote. “Staff was not comfortable with that single bid, so we’d like to put it out again in the hopes of having a more competitive bid environment.”
Radnor has already purchased a couple of electric vehicles for its police department. As they get additional electric vehicles for the police and other departments, they expect more of a need for additional changing stations.
Once a company is approved, the electric vehicle charging station will be located in the lower parking lot at the township municipal building near the police entrance.
The chargers would be for the existing police electric vehicles and future electric vehicles that the township expects to purchase.
The infrastructure would also be in place to add new chargers as the township acquires more electric vehicles.
William White, township manager, said, although they are starting with electric vehicles for the police department, they plan on getting some for other departments.
Commissioner Jake Abel asked about putting chargers in municipal parking lots for residents.
According to Norcini, the township did that several years ago, but when the lease expired, the company they were working with decided against renewing it.
In 2011, Radnor officials announced they had installed a charging station at the North Wayne Municipal parking lot.
“I think we were just a little ahead of the curve back then,” Norcini said.
