To keep up with EV production we need more charging stations

GM’s latest decision in pursuit of an electric vehicle (EV) future focuses on one important issue. (“GM hires former Tesla exec Kurt Kelty to help it make EVs more affordable,” Detroit Free Press, Feb. 8, 2024.)

GM ignores another obstacle that is as large or larger: The strategic need for convenient access to public charging stations for EV drivers who cannot charge where they reside.

There is a shocking dearth of reliable, affordable, easy and convenient public charging stations — both “Level 2” but, especially, direct current (DC) Fast-chargers. This lack will hobble the appeal of EVs for those who cannot charge at-home. There is such a large segment of the driving public who may want an EV but have the onerous task of finding accessible and reliable public chargers to use.
